Hearing Aid Insurance

Did the dog eat your hearing aid – or was it the cat? Did you accidentally jump in the shower – or the ocean – with your hearing aids on? Did you lose a hearing aid?

Some insurance companies have arrangements with preferred hearing aid providers. However, hearing aids are medical devices, and in many cases you can request a cash settlement instead of using the insurer’s preferred supplier. This allows you to choose the audiology provider that best meets your needs, rather than being limited to a contracted clinic.

If you are considering making an insurance claim, it is worth asking your insurer whether a cash payout is available, as this can give you greater flexibility in selecting your hearing care provider. Under New Zealand’s Health and Disability Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights, your informed consent is required before proceeding with any hearing aid purchase or fitting, and you have the right to make an informed choice about your provider.
